IKAW MAG-SABI
Team: Jelwen Arconado Arlantico
University: ESDi Escuela Superior de Diseño Year: 2025 Category: Fiction [+] Synopsis The work focuses on brief scenes from the daily life of a young girl who is forced to act as her mother’s spokesperson, as her mother does not master the local language. Throughout the scenes, the phrase “Ikaw mag-sabi” (“you say it”), spoken by the mother, becomes a constant hammering that shapes the girl’s mood, forcing her to mediate between her family’s foreign culture and the local environment. As the story unfolds, similar expressions multiply, further cementing her role as an involuntary translator. What initially seems like a simple game gradually overwhelms her: every phone call she must answer, every conflict she must clarify, slowly exhausts her. When her mother looks at her and says “Ikaw mag-sabi,” the girl hesitates and becomes frustrated—until one day, a sudden, definitive, and ruthless piece of news she must translate for her mother marks a turning point in the story. This short film represents the experience of many immigrant children who, from a very young age, act as intermediaries between their foreign parents and their surroundings—children who become bridges across cultural divides. At the same time, the work reveals an underlying conflict that remains strikingly relevant in the European context.
